What the Tale of the Golden Cockerel is about: the meaning of the tale, what it teaches children

Reading children’s books isn’t just fun. A magical story makes it possible to ask questions, look for an answer to them, reflect on what you read. There is something to think about. “The Tale of the Golden Cockerel” is the most mysterious of all Pushkin’s tales. She not only captivates with an interesting plot, but can also teach a kid a lot.

The poet wrote a fairy tale in which the tsar does not know how to keep his word and dies from female spells for adults. We get to know her at an early age. When it comes time to read this story to your children, it turns out that there is a lot of strange and incomprehensible in it.

The meaning of the tale of the cockerel is not always clear

Some of the secrets of the most mysterious Pushkin fairy tale are revealed. The source of her plot is found in the story of V. Irving about the Moorish sultan. This monarch also received a magical means from the elder to protect the borders. It also became known how the astrologer is connected with the Shemakhan area: sectarian eunuchs were exiled to the Azerbaijani city of Shemakha.

But the secrets remained. We do not know why the royal sons killed each other, but we can only guess what happened between them and the Shamahan queen. The Tsar Maiden is a product of the dark forces. Her sinister laugh accompanies the murder of the sage. At the end, the queen disappears without a trace, as if dissolving in the air. Perhaps she was a demon or a ghost, or perhaps a living, beautiful and seductive woman.

The tale does not explain who the astrologer is – a good wizard or an evil sorcerer. The old eunuch refuses all gifts and for some reason demands a queen for himself. Maybe he wants to save the kingdom from the glamor of the witch, or maybe he just envies the sovereign and wants to take the most precious thing from him. Or is it part of his complex plan to conquer power, and the cockerel and the girl are magical tools in his hands.

The guys understand the tale through the characters. Positive characters are rewarded for their kindness, generosity, and hard work. Negative ones show how not to act. For greed, laziness and deceit, retribution always follows. The little ones will learn why the hero was punished, what he did wrong.

Fairy tale – fun and useful reading for children

The king is endowed with such features that do not bring him to good:

  • Carelessness. Dadon promises to fulfill any desire of the astrologer. He is not worried that the price of the acquired item may be too high.
  • Laziness. One could think of other ways to defend against enemies. The king does not do this, because he has a magic bird. The help of a sorcerer is the simplest solution.
  • Dishonesty. There are people who can knit something and not pay. They come up with various excuses, for example, that the price was exorbitant. The ruler decides that the old man does not need a girl, and he will not fulfill a stupid request.
  • The habit of achieving everything by force. In his youth, the monarch ravaged and robbed his neighbors, now he is killing a sage who stood in his way.

Dadon does not draw conclusions, does not learn from his mistakes, always acts as he used to. He gets rid of the new obstacle in a familiar way. As a result, the hero dies.

What is the use of fairy tales for children

Through a fairy tale, the child learns the world and human relationships. In fairy tales, good and evil returns to the one who created it. Dadon used to hurt his neighbors, now they hurt him. The tale advises not to make empty promises and keep your word. The king refused the agreement and paid for it.

The sovereign calls on magic to help and regains the lost power. But soon his sons and he himself fell under the spell of the Shamakhan queen. The magic cockerel first serves its master, and then pounces on him. The little reader sees that it is better to rely on yourself, not to wait for the help of magic.

The tale shows that one must think about the consequences of one’s actions, calculate one’s strength. The king attacked other countries and conquered many lands. In old age, he wanted to live in peace, but nothing happened. The borders of his state expanded, it became difficult to keep track of them. The ruler does not know from which side he will be attacked, does not have time to react quickly.

There are many instructive things in the fairy tale about the magic cockerel, but there is also some understatement, unclear moments. To answer all children’s questions, you need to understand it yourself well. For those who want to do this, it will be interesting to read The Legend of the Arab Astrologer, which inspired Pushkin to create the work.
