Cocktail White Russian

The history of the White Russian cocktail

The first mention of such a cocktail dates back to 1949, when the traditional Black Russian cocktail appeared, consisting only of vodka and kahlua.

Somewhat later, cream was added to it, the name changed to White Russian, and the cocktail began to be considered a women’s drink.

White Russian appeared in print in the Oakland Tribune on November 21, 1955, at the same time the recipe was included in the code of the International Bartenders Association.

An interesting fact is that neither Black Russian nor White Russian were invented in Russia.

The name “Russian” cocktail deserved only by the fact that its main ingredient is vodka.

In addition, there are many different variations of the cocktail, in which the kahlua coffee liqueur is replaced with cognac, and the cream is replaced with milk.

The cocktail received its “second birth” after the release of the film “The Big Lebowski”. In this picture, the main character Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski drinks a White Russian cocktail and says that it is his favorite drink. It was after this film that the cocktail ceased to be considered feminine.
