An underground pipe to distribute Beer

Distribution within cities is becoming more and more complex, especially if it is intended to guarantee a service in the historic centers of many cities.

All this, together with factors such as ecology or urgency, make the current forms of service increasingly polluting and, at the same time, recurrence forces each delivery to become more expensive.

With all these factors, an initiative has appeared already in the accreditation phase of the local authorities, in the Belgian city of “Witches“, Which has surprised us enormously but which at the same time is a clear example of ecology and sustainability.

The project progresses and aims to build a special pipe system to transport beer through it and thus reduce the use of trucks in the city.

In the purest style of a telecommunications operator, it wants to reach the taps of each “establishment” with the polyethylene.

The construction of “beer pipeline”Will be buried and the execution will be carried out by one of the oldest breweries in the city in order to supply its premises with the alcoholic beverage par excellence in the capital of Flanders.

The words of the director of the brewery, Xavier Vanneste, give us an overview of the materials and conditions of the work:

The pipes will be made of polyethylene: they are stronger than a steel conduit. This way we are sure that there are no leaks or illegal extractions.

The estimated length in this first phase is 3 kilometers of pipes that will be able to transport about 6.000 liters of beer per hour. Achieving that the circulation of transport vehicles in the urban area of the city is reduced by about 500 trucks a day with the consequent annoyances that they cause as well as the reduction of CO2 emissions.

We only have to wait for the months of the year to advance to see if, in fact, by the end of 2015 the local authorities have already given their approval to the project and it becomes a reality that can be perfectly exported to other European cities.
