Pear “Elena” is a hybrid variety obtained in Armenia in 1960. It grows and bears fruit in the southern and central black earth regions of Russia. The early winter variety enjoys a well-deserved fame for its yield, keeping quality and excellent taste of the fruit.

Description of the advantages of the pear variety “Elena”

Pear trees of this variety are low, with a pyramidal crown. Fruits weighing up to 200 g, round-pear-shaped. They are green-yellow in color, mature have a slight blush. Pears taste sweet and sour, slightly tart, highly appreciated by experts. They are delicious fresh, they are used to prepare juices, cook compotes and preserves, add pears to salads.

Pear “Elena” – a variety with excellent taste

Trees begin to bear fruit at 5-7 years. Although the crop yield is average, about 40 kg per tree, it bears fruit consistently every year. Ripe pears are harvested in the second half of September. This must be done immediately, a maximum of 15 days, because ripe fruits quickly fall off. But you can store the harvested crop in a cool place for a long time – up to 4 months.

The stability of the yields of this variety is explained by its self-fertility – it does not need other varieties for pollination and fruit setting.

To the pluses of this variety, you can add resistance to fungal diseases. The culture is photophilous and thermophilic. The planting site should be sunny, no drafts. Pear “Elena” does not tolerate high groundwater. In this case, drainage is required.

How to plant the Elena pear variety and how to care for it?

The pear can be planted in the fall, before the first frost, or in the spring, when the frost is over. The best soils are loamy, loose, providing aeration of the roots. Sandy or heavy clay soils need to be improved. Clay – peat, compost, river sand. Sandy – with humus, peat, compost.

Drainage is placed in a pit, 50-70 cm deep and about 1 m wide, if the groundwater is above 2 m.Then a mixture of soil with peat or humus is added, superphosphate can be used. The sapling is pruned and planted in a pit with a fertile mixture. The root collar is not buried, otherwise the seedling will die. Be sure to dig in a peg, to which a tree is tied for stability. Fall asleep with earth. Cut off the top. Water abundantly.

Pear care includes:

  1. Top dressing. They start in May in the second year – they add urea or saltpeter. After harvesting, the trees are fed with organic and phosphorus-potassium fertilizers to nourish the roots and prepare the crop for winter dormancy.
  2. Watering. Watering the trees should be regular and abundant, as the pear loves moisture. Adequate watering helps her to withstand cold weather better.
  3. Pruning. In March, they do sanitary and crown-forming pruning.
  4. Disease prevention. During the budding period and during budding, 2 preventive treatments are carried out. Then the treatment is repeated after 2 weeks. Further, diseases and pests are fought only upon the fact of their appearance. Processing is not carried out if there is a month left before harvesting.
