Useful “waste” that we throw away

When we eat, we often end up throwing parts like the core of an apple or the skin of a kiwi into the trash can. It turns out that many of these “waste” are edible and even useful. When you buy food, especially organic, don’t throw away what you don’t need next time.

Broccoli stems and leaves

Most of us love broccoli florets, but the stems are quite edible. They can be rubbed with salt or sprinkled with vegan mayonnaise for a great side dish. Broccoli leaves are especially beneficial because they contain carotenoids, which are converted into vitamin A.

  • Finely chop the stems and add to the stir-fry

  • Add to soups

  • cut into salad

Peel and peel of an orange

Most of us only see orange peel as packaging. But the rinds and the white part between the peel and the fruit are very helpful. They contain antioxidant flavonoids, including hesperidin. Hesperidin is a strong anti-inflammatory substance and lowers cholesterol levels. The antioxidants in orange peels help clear the lungs.

The orange peel itself is too bitter to eat. But it can be added to tea or jam. A good drink is a decoction of orange peel with ginger and cinnamon, sweetened to taste. There are many recipes that use orange peel. Orange peel is good as a body scrub and as a mosquito repellent.
