Preparation for childbirth: the Bonapace method

What is the Bonapace method?

The Bonapace method, which comes to us from Canada, combines three techniques: finger pressure, massage and relaxation which reduce the pain of contractions. By pressing certain precise points, we distract the brain which will secrete endorphins. This method reduces childbirth pain by 50%. The sensations will be able to guide the mother to know where the baby is, what positions to adopt to facilitate the passage, etc. This method gives the mom tools and to the partner to reduce the perception of pain (physical intensity) and deal with the intense sensations of childbirth (that is to say to reduce the unpleasant aspect).

The Bonapace method: what does it consist of?

When a woman experiences pain both during pregnancy and childbirth, her partner may press certain precise points (called trigger zones) to create a second pain point at a distance, and as a sort of diversion. Not only does the brain focus less on the initial pain, it also secretes endorphins. These natural hormones, similar to morphine, block the transmission of pain sensations to the brain. These pressures also serve to improveeffectiveness of contractions. As for massages, on the lumbar region for example, they soothe the expectant mother after the contraction and help her to come into contact with her baby again.

The role of the dad with the Bonapace method

Close

“For a couple, the arrival of a child is followed by a period (especially the first year) of changes and adjustments, which can weaken the relationship. To go through this moment of transition together, parents need to feel confident and united. Give importance to the father during pregnancy and childbirth by allowing him to play an active role is a major key to getting there. Research shows that when the father feels competent, useful and autonomous in supporting his partner during childbirth, communication within the couple, the father-child bond and the esteem of the father and mother are strengthened. », Explains Julie Bonapace, founder of the method. Unlike more traditional methods, the future dad does not only accompany his wife, he also comes to prepare for the birth. Its participation is essential and its role, essential. He learns, during the sessions, to locate these “trigger zones”. Eight points located on the hands, feet, sacrum and buttocks. The future dad will also learn to massaging his wife with gentle and light gestures. This “light touch” acts like a caress that dilutes the pain. During childbirth, he helps his partner to stay focused, without being overwhelmed by apprehension or pain. In the absence of a partner, the mother can also follow the program with the person who will accompany her during the birth.

Relax thanks to the Bonapace method

Everything is done to ensure that pregnancy and childbirth take place in the best conditions through:

– Comfort massages, acupressure points on reflex zones that provide relief while activating work

– Breathing and relaxation techniques

– Postures to align the pelvis during pregnancy and to help the baby’s passage during labor and delivery

– Emotional liberation techniques to overcome fears and negative experiences

The Bonapace method: a three-way encounter

During each session, future parents discover the art and benefits of massage. By touching their baby, they get to know him and establish a three-way dialogue, through their caresses. From birth, they will be more comfortable with their child, will take it easily and spontaneously in their arms, without fear or apprehension.

We can start this preparation from the 24th week of pregnancy. As this method comes from Quebec, the trainers offer online workshops, with the help of a trainer to guide the couple in e-coaching formula for all the physical preparation. Thanks to a webcam, trainers remotely correct positions and pressure points.

Reimbursed birth preparation

Social Security pays for 100% eight birth preparation sessions, from the 6th month of pregnancy (before, they will only be paid for at 70%), provided that these sessions are given by a doctor or a midwife and that they include theoretical information, work body (breathing), muscle work (back and perineum) and finally relaxation.
